YESVANCOUVER: Interview with Carine Redmond, Owner of Carine Redmond and Associates

Based in Vancouver, Carine Redmond handles the Western Canada PR for national and global lifestyle brands, as the Owner of Carine Redmond and Associates. Carine grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and attended McGill University. Upon graduating, Carine turned her energy towards all things media and has worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment and PR.

When not at work, Carine enjoys watching reruns of Friday Night Lights, catching up on all things Kardashian, worshipping Oprah Winfrey and following @instagrambeagles. Her other hobbies include hitting up a barre class, drinking wine and photographing her beagle pup Tim Riggins (he’s pretty famous).

How do you find creativity, to add a fresh punch to every campaign?

Clients usually have something specific they want to promote (a seasonal product, rebrand, or specific event for example) which always helps but otherwise, good old brainstorm sessions work well. I like to meet with my client and/or team and figure out what people want, how we can promote something, do things a little bit differently. Any creative thinking has to happen away from my desk.

What client/campaign excites you the most?

This is going to sound extra PR girl but I really do like everyone that I work with. If a potential client or brand doesn’t appeal to me on a perusal level i don’t take them on – it makes it too hard to secure press or have a sustainable relationship. I don’t think you can promote something you don’t believe in (sorry guys).

What’s your top Personal branding tip?

Be yourself, but be the best version of yourself. Remember that we all live online, and potential employers are going to look at your online presence. Trust me.

What do you do to disconnect and unwind?

Lots of walks (with my pup), time outside, I love having friends over for dinner, and I spend a lot of time listening to True Crime podcasts.

If not PR, what would your be your dream job?

I would probably work in media. As a kid and before I knew what PR really was I wanted to work for a magazine.

The Anthology – Workspace: Publicist Carine Redmond’s Office Version 2.0

The Anthology’s Workspace column takes us inside the creative spaces of some very creative people.

Carine Redmond deserves full credit for bringing back The Anthology’s Workspace column. The Vancouver-based publicist’s gummy worm-covered desk was one of my favourite features back in the day. And when that Facebook memory popped up in my feed, I remembered how much I love creeping on people’s creative spaces.

So here we are! In Carine’s stunning new light-filled office. Shot by Vancouver-based photographer Whitney Krutzfeldt, the candy’s much fancier, the Kardashians are much more prominent, plus now there’s a puppy!

The Anthology: Wait. I recognize that globe.

Carine Redmond: It’s the same one! Jillian Harris used it for a shoot (I can’t remember what for) I was working on years ago and afterwards I went to Country Furniture and immediately purchased it like a little copycat. It’s my favourite item on my desk and has made it through many moves.

Working with Etsy, I spend a lot of days perusing product online. The ‘relationship status Avocado’ mug is so funny to me and all of my notebooks, cards, and most of my office accessories are from Etsy.

I still get my photos printed and like to keep recent ones on my desk – I switch them out periodically. I LOVE my white desk chair. An ex boyfriend bought it for me but I can’t part with it so I just tell myself it was a gift from my puppy.

TA: Do you seriously have that candy on your desk all day?

CR: I usually do, mostly because the Sugarfina stuff is so cute. I try to force it on visitors so that I don’t eat it. Often the girls who work for me.

TA: You read good ol’ fashioned printed magazines!

CR: I read books and magazines online like everybody else but still like to have hard copies – so if I really want to read something I buy a non digital version. I peruse magazines for pitch ideas and inspiration and tear sheets out for my vision boards (seriously).

TA: When are you most productive?

CR: I’m most productive work wise in the AM (7am-12pm). I try to do any real writing, editing and creative work before logging onto email. If I do that then I am able to spend the rest of the day in meetings and on calls and answering the flood of emails.

TA: How do you stay organized when you’re juggling a million clients and projects?

CR: By keeping a clean email inbox. I live and die by this rule. Keep what you need to tackle in your inbox and file everything else away. Clutter makes me crazy and that includes digital clutter.

TA: KKW! (I guess that’s more of a statement than a question!)

CR: Kim Kardashian has always done the best nude lip and I spent years trying to copy it and recreate it. Naturally, I had to get her KKW x Kylie Cosmetics nude lip kit. I love the Kardashians and still watch the show, not in an ironic way. Sorry guys!

TA: What’s the hardest thing about working for yourself?

CR: Managing other people, and all the accounting – my least favourite part of running a business.

TA: What are you most excited about right now work-wise?

CR: So much! Summer is fun for us because we have a lot of events. We’re helping Grey Goose with their Sunset Soiree events in Western Canada this August and as you can imagine, those are big and extravagant and include vodka so fun is had by all.

TA: Tell us about Tim Riggins: the man, the myth, the beagle!

CR: Tim Riggins spends his days trying to climb up on my desk and look out the window. Truth be told, it’s hard to get much work done with him around so I keep his social calendar packed during the week!

Carine Redmond handles the Western Canada PR for national and global lifestyle brands like Etsy, Parallel 49 Brewing Company, The Dailey Method, the Bentall Kennedy Group, India Rose Cosmeticary and the Chatters Style Happy tour. When she’s not at work, Carine’s usually watching reruns of Friday Night Lights, catching up on all things Kardashian or photographing her beagle pup Tim Riggins.

P.S. Know someone (like, say…you!) who needs an excuse to tidy up their super stylish desk? Send a note to KDundon@TheAnthology.ca — we’d love to see your workspace!

#ZESTWoman: Carine Redmond loves Riggins

CARINE AND TIM RIGGINS
Carine Redmond is everywhere in Vancouver. Always media savvy and a pop-culture expert, Carine fell in love with ‘the biz’ while working on The Tyra Banks show.

Carine grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, attended McGill University and moved to Vancouver in 2008 and started her public relations business. Fast forward to 2017, and she is an established Vancouver-based publicist and principal at her firm Carine Redmond & Associates. Her brand is on point due to her vision and connectedness to the culture around us.

BLUSH loves entrepreneurial women who are shining brightly and warmly. Carine is just that person, and we were so pleased when she was nominated. (That she loves her pup Tim Riggins is just an added bonus of awesomeness!)

How do you define success and what is the best way to achieve long-term success?
Success is different for everyone, but I think having clear long term goals and a vision for how you want your life to look is important. Take the small steps to get there. Stay flexible and be open to opportunities that come your way.

How do you generate new business and stay creative?
Relationship building! Staying connected with people in the industry, which also fuels creativity. That and lots of brainstorm sessions – alone, with my team, with clients. The majority of my business comes from word of mouth but I approach brands I want to work with and stay in the know about who’s new, and who might want our help.

What makes you most happy? And what do you do on your time off?
Lots of things about my job makes me happy – getting to do what I love, working with brands I admire, positive clients and the flexibility of working for myself. When I’m not working I like spending time with family and friends, getting outside, cooking, baking, watching TV (I watch a lot of TV, but hey it’s part of my job to stay on top of all things media and pop culture) and getting out of town even if it’s just for the weekend. Which reminds me, I need to plan a vacation!

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
Like anyone who has their own business, professional failure is probably my biggest fear. I have the tendency to dwell, so I try my best to focus on the good stuff. Also, ghosts!

What motivates you to make change?
Whether it’s in my business or my personal life, I always know it’s time to make a change when I find myself feeling bored. Sometimes it’s about making small shifts, and sometimes you have to really look at the bigger picture and see what needs to go or change and what should stay the same. Life decluttering.

What advice do you have for other women looking to take a big step in their lives?
Just do it! You can wait around for things to be perfect and look exactly the way you want them to look but life doesn’t work that way. Taking that initial leap will get you further in the end. And just know what you want and believe in yourself. You’ll have little failures, but that’s okay.

The life of a publicist can be demanding – especially in a major city like Vancouver, but PR guru Carine Redmond somehow manages to make running a PR business not only look easy, but fun. This boss babe is creative, easy going (well, on the outside) and humble despite her extensive work experience with major names and notable brands like Etsy Canada, The Dailey Method Vancouver, and Parallel 49 Brewing Company.
5. She is obsessed with Friday Night Lights
She even named her beagle puppy after heartthrob character Tim Riggins.

4. She loves the Kardashians
And isn’t afraid to admit it! Kim Kardashian is her spirit animal. Her nickname is Coco but it’s Koko with a K when she’s feeling sassy!

3. She’s a Wine-O
Red OR white – there’s no discrimination. She’s also a diet coke-head at heart but she had to quit that habit years ago.

2. She’s really into Zodiac Signs
She’s a Capricorn through and through and loves to know other people’s signs and hear their ghost stories.

1. She loves to bake
Especially at Christmas, she keeps her desk stocked with sour candy, gummy bears and fruit and nut bars. You never know when there could be a sugar emergency!
